New archeological discoveries at Al Shuwaib
Written By WAM    Print   Email

June 8th, 2009: The Abu Dhabi Authority of Culture and Heritage (ADACH) today announced new discoveries from the Neolithic Age and Late Islamic period at Al-Shuwaib archeological site in Abu Dhabi. The discoveries include a pair of silver earrings, two bronze coins, a small ring, stone tools used as hummers, grain grinders and knife sharpeners, as well as pieces of stone stoves, pieces of pottery and fossils of ostrich, ADACH said in a press release. Granite fragments were also found on the site. ADACH said these probably mark attempts to carve granite pieces during the Neolithic Age. The pottery fractures , it said, date back to the Late Islamic period and seemingly belong to nomad tribes roaming the region in winter for food and water.

Abu Dhabi citizens played a vital role in reporting several desert sites to ADACH and handed over several ancient pieces. ADACH recently carried out surveys and excavations in different parts in Abu Dhabi. Sites include Al Shuwaib and areas on Al Ain- Dubai highway. In recent years, ADACH's team made discoveries at Mahdar Al Meri, Bedou' Al Shuaiber in Al Khatam area, Al-Khazna and Bukheesa forests
