AFP - Shimon Peres met Queen Elizabeth II and her heir apparent Prince Charles on Thursday, on the final day of the Israeli president's three-day visit to Britain.Buckingham Palace gave no details of the private meeting, but Peres's talks with Charles lasted 45 minutes and included climate change, a spokesman for the Prince of Wales said.Peres, a former Israeli prime minister and Nobel Peace Prize winner, was due to meet British Foreign Secretary David Miliband and Prime Minister Gordon Brown later before dining with Brown at Downing Street.
Miliband is just back from a visit to Syria where he met President Bashar al-Assad and stated that Damascus "has the opportunity to play a constructive role in many aspects of peace in the region".Peres, however, said Syria must choose between "peace or belligerence" in its dealings with Israel."They cannot escape the choice ... they are under the impression that they can do both," he added Wednesday. The president arrived Monday to discuss British-Israeli diplomatic, military and economic cooperation plus Iran's disputed nuclear programme and the Middle East peace process.
His other engagements in Britain have included speaking at the Oxford Union debating society Tuesday when he was interrupted by protestors.Peres dismissed the demonstration in an interview with Sky News television."So I'm asking myself gentlemen, with due respect, what are you really suggesting? That I should be impressed by you? Why should I? I looked at the boys with a little bit of chagrin, I said: 'My God'," he said."I don't think they did a great public relations for themselves."Peres has also addressed parliament during his visit -- a rare honour which he now has performed twice.
